Great bars / places to watch sports:
• Tiny’s Tavern
A short walk up the street and well worth it!! This place is straight up Voltaire Street about 5 blocks from the hotel. Cross Sunset Cliffs and go past co-op, Tiny’s is on the right. They have street parking out front and around back but please don’t drink and drive!! This place is a total locals hang out. LOTS OF SPORTS on a bunch of TV’s including golf (the owner, Tiny, is a golf fanatic!!). They have great food – try their special of the day – always special! I love their hot wings, shrimp burgers and Hawaiian Sliders (if you like White Castle you’ll LOVE these!!) Lots of beer on tap, some wines but no liquor. They have a great patio out back for smokers and drinkers!
• Lucy’s
Three blocks away from the hotel on Voltaire. No food but lots of people hanging out, sports on TV, pool tables, tunes and shuffleboard. A favorite with the locals for early morning drinks. Really -- they open 7am (Josh doesn’t get there until later most days).
• Sunshine Company
In the middle of all the action on Newport Avenue (OB’s main drag). Sunshine offers half price pitchers every day from 5-6pm (even weekends!) Lots of TV’s for sports, pool tables, open air seating downstairs perfect for people watching and a spectacular oceanview rooftop patio bar. Livingston’s Kitchen is attached downstairs and has great Mexican food and broasted chicken - open late.
• Pacific Shores aka Pac Shores
This is a funky dive bar with an underwater ocean theme – you have to see this place. One of OB’s oldest and best. Opens early and closes late!
• Winston’s
LIVE MUSIC NIGHTLY – need we say more!! OB Okee on Sundays, Grateful Dead cover band Electric Waste Band on Mondays, Think & Drink Trivia on Tuesdays, OB Stand Up Comedy on Fridays.
Restaurants:
• Nick’s at the Pier
OB’s best view!! The restaurant overlooks the Pacific Ocean and OB Pier and serves fresh seafood, steaks, pasta etc. The lounge next door is 21 and over only and a great place to hang out, watch sports, get great food, drinks and meet people. ($$-$$$)
• O’Bistro
This is a fun restaurant two blocks away from hotel. They have a pet-friendly dining patio, a bar with one TV and great servers!! They are open for lunch and dinner everyday and serve breakfast on Saturday and Sundays 9am-1pm. ($$-$$$)
• Shades
Another nice restaurant with a view. They have a big menu with something to please everyone in your party. A good choice if you have kids. They have lots of seating inside and out and are open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have a bar inside with locals lined up from end to end most of the time. Happy Hour is 4-6 Mon-Fri with $3.00 22oz. draft beers (including the good ones!!) ($$)
• The Vine Bar & Cafe
This little wine café/restaurant is on the corner of Bacon St and Niagara (one block off Newport). Great wine list, imported beers and tasty California Cuisine. Closed Mondays ($$-$$$)
• Third Corner
Great atmosphere, this cute wine bar serves appetizers, gourmet cheeses and other unique dining selections. This place is like a small cottage full of wine. They encourage you to walk around and pick a bottle, they will then cork it for you (for a $5 fee) to enjoy with your meal. They have living room like settings where you can hang out for hours and drink with your friends. Try the pork tenderloin with mustard sauce or salmon – both crowd pleasers. They are open daily from 11:30am until 1am (OB’s only late night dining), closed on Mondays. ($$-$$$)
• Kaiserhof
An authentic German restaurant on Sunset Cliffs Blvd with parking in back. If you like meat, sausages or anything German this is the place for you!! Try their deep fried pork shank dinner (crispy on the outside, incredibly tender on the inside!) Check out their Biergarten for happy hour daily (except Mondays) - you’ll find great drink specials and free food. ($$-$$$)
• Thee Bungalow
This award winning restaurant is right up the street. ($$$-$$$$) Specialties of Thee Bungalow include their famous roast duck, rack of lamb, fresh seafood, quenelles, escargot Bourgogne, wild game, prime grade beef as well as incredible dessert soufflés. An annual award winner of the Wine Spectator’s “Best of Award of Excellence,” Thee Bungalow’s extensive wine list features modestly priced wines from all regions of the world. A full service bar is also available.
• Hodad’s
OB’s world famous hamburgers and shakes! They were featured on The Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”, you gotta try this place while you’re here. They use real ingredients and make the stuff themselves, fresh, while you wait – where else do you get that these days?? ($)
• BBQ House
Awesome ribs, chicken and pulled pork sandwiches (they smoke their meat outback daily and make their own BBQ sauce). Family meals with enough food to feed lots of hungry people. This is a small family run business that accepts cash only. They have a few tables inside and out; they also do take-out orders so call ahead. ($)
• Little Chef
The best Chinese food around. They only have seating for about 8-10 people total so it’s really more of a take out place. Very friendly service and if you call ahead by the time you park out front it will be ready and waiting for you. ($)
• Lighthouse Ice Cream and Yogurt
The place for sweet treats!! This locals favorite serves up some of the tastiest ice cream dishes in town. They have an extensive selection of ice cream, frozen yogurt, soy ice cream, waffle cones and their specialty a Hot Waffle Ice Cream Sandwich!! They also have chocolate covered frozen bananas, hot fudge sundaes and shakes! On Newport Ave near the pier, open daily from 11:30am-10pm.
